Beyond the canvas
I'm Richman J. Smith, a high school senior, artist, and creator with a passion for visual storytelling. My work spans ink, charcoal, pencil, and digital media, drawing inspiration from comic art, anime, classical anatomy, and the world around me.
I'm planning to study graphic design in college with a minor in art, combining my love of drawing with technology and problem-solving. What you see here is just a selection of my work. I have plenty more pieces in progress that haven't made it to this portfolio yet, so check back often. I plan to add new work regularly as I finish it.
I've taken Saturday art classes at DSA and studied art at the University of Michigan. I also built games through DAPCEP and the Kidpreneur's program, was on the chess and robotics teams, and I play baseball and do debate. All of it feeds into how I think about art and design.

"I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. It's just how my brain works."
I started drawing when I was little, just copying characters from comics and anime, filling up notebooks during class. Somewhere along the way it stopped being something I just did for fun and became something I actually cared about getting better at. Now I work mostly with ink, pencil, and charcoal, and I've been teaching myself digital stuff too. I like figuring out how to make things look real. Hands, faces, anatomy. I spend a lot of time on details like cross-hatching and shading.
A lot of what I draw comes from things I'm into. Video game characters, anime, comics. But I also like doing studies of real things, like the skull piece I did in white chalk on black paper or the ink drawing of hands. I think the coolest part of art is when you can look at a drawing and feel something from it, not just see it. That's what I'm always trying to get better at.
I do a lot of other stuff too. I play baseball, do debate, and I used to be on the chess team and robotics team. I've taken Saturday art classes at DSA and studied art at the University of Michigan. I also built games through DAPCEP and the Kidpreneur's program, which is what got me into coding. Honestly, coding is what made me interested in graphic design. I like the idea of combining art with technology and actually building things people can use. That's what I want to study in college: graphic design, with a minor in art.
This portfolio is basically everything I've been working on. Some of it is old, some of it is recent, and you can probably tell the difference. But that's kind of the point. I want people to see how I've gotten better over time. I'm still learning, and I'm excited to keep going.
